SOUNDS for different scenes.. Clips

I have looked and deconstructed a few scenes and sounds from horror/thriller films to see what sounds we could use/imitate in our coursework.

1. One example, is the sounds used within the One tree hill scene when Peyton and Brooke are being held hostage. The sound includes; very heavy and irratic breathing as well as a non-diagetic sounds of an eletric guitar and snare drums.

2. Another example, is the music and sounds used within the beginning 20seconds of the opening scene to Sorrority Row. The sounds used are; a low drumming sound, with some elements of guitar as well. These sounds are combined to create an eary and uneasy sound.
I thought that we could make some music like this, an use it in either the attic scene, or the shots of when Laura is walking home.

3. Also in 28 weeks later, the sounds used, when the main man is running away from the "infected zombies" are very effective and take the audience along with the character. The sound used includes; a constant and slow drumming which greatly aids in making the action appear as though it is ongoing and that he is striving to get away. This type of sound could be very effective and work well, when Laura is walking home, as it creates the atmosphere that the character is desperate to get away. And emphasises their journey to escape i.e. How ongoing it is, with the use of the constant drumming/instrument. Below is the link to the 28 weeks later scene, where the man is running away. - All of the clips above are sounds/pieces of music which I think we could use within our coursework. Any comments or suggestions, as to how we could use or create these affects would be greatly appreciated :)

Day for Night filming

Most people shoot during the day but make it feel like night.

you can do this by post process or a change that can be made within the camera

take film which id designed to be shot under 3600c outside and it will have a blueish look to the film.

with most modern day technology you could most probably add this blueish tinge when editing your footage.

its the blueish colour that makes it look like night time as blue is accociated with night time.

once you have the blue in your footage you can put the colour down and make the tone darker.

this should hopefully make it look like night but test it first as it may not always work.

SOUND - For scenes in our filming

I have looked at some clips from horror/thriller films and how they use different sounds and effects in different situations.
Non-diagetic and Diagetic sounds...


The first one I looked at was ONE TREE HILL:

- The scene when Peyton and Brooke are being held hostage by Derek.

The music is very eary and uses; guitars and a low man's voice. This helps to build up the feeling of tension, and intense vulnerability of the characters.
The diagetic sounds are of very deep breathing and wining from the Peyton and Brooke which illustrates how scared and isolated they feel.


We could use this idea of the deep breathing and the backing sounds of guitars, in the scene where laura is walking home to create the feeling that she is isolated and in danger. Deep breathing greatly builds up the tension of the situation.



I also looked at SORORITY ROW:

- The scene right at the start of Sorority row, where the camera is zooming in on the house, where there is a party. The non-diagetic music is very creepy and makes the audience automatically suspicious of what is going on. The music is very slow and uses violins, which help to create tension and make the audience feel uncomfortable instantly. Also the use of the diagetic screaming when this music begins to fade, is very effective as it cuts the audience straight back into the action and shows just how dangerous the situation is.

We could use the violin as part of our sound effects and non-diagetic sounds, when Laura is being held hostage in the attic, as it creates the feeling of danger and intense vulnerablitity from the victims perspective. Also the use of the screaming cutting straight through the non-diagetic sound could be very effective in our piece, as in the attic scence, over the non-diagetic sound we could use laura's deep and irratic breathing to be played over the top of it. This would greatly help to throw the audience straight back into the severity of the hostages precarious situation.

- Then I looked at 28 WEEKS LATER:

- The scene when the main character is running away from "the infected" zombies, the non-diagetic sound creates the feeling of desperation and distress. The use of the constant light drumming makes the audience feel as though the character/s are trying to keep going an escape.

Therefore we could use this use of non-diagetic sound when Laura is walking home, it will help to create the feeling that, she is trying to get away from her problems e.g. breaking up with her boyfriend. And also this sound will emphasis that she is making her way home. Slowly with great effort, as she is very drunk.

Deconstruction - Inside Man "abduction scene"

This is focusing on the abduction scene in Inside Man, when there are many hostages about 50 people all being held captive in a bank.

Lighting:

- In the first shot of the abduction scene, when all the hostages and the aggressors are following them down the stairs, the lighting is VERY dim and only a few beams of bright light, picking up the peoples faces and expressions. This clearly demonstrates just how desperate and scared the hostages are.
- Then as all the people assemble in the main room where they are being given instructions, the light gets slightly brighter and there is more light on the room, showing just how large and imposing their environment as well as the aggressors are.
- Moreover, when the main "bad guy" is talking to all of the hostages and says, "take off your clothes," this light becomes slightly brighter and emphasises the severity of the situation, as the light shows all the people having to get changed and how uncomfortable and vialated they feel. By showing them all frowing and looking at eachother with fear.

Sound:

- In the shot when all the hostages and aggressors are coming down the stairs, the sound is a non diagetic backing track, of low toned organ music which creates a very eary and tense atmosphere.
- Then next shot when all the hostages are lined up and being given instructions. One of the hostages whimpers, " why are you doing this to me?" This illustrates how scared and anxious all of the hostages are including a fully grown man.
- One of the next lines from the "bad guy" is, "everyone else over there," this portrays that the agressors have very little compassion if any and are just there to do a job and get what they WANT.

Mise en scene:

- Throughout the entire main hostage scene, there is a prevelant tense and rushed feeling. From when they are all being lined up at the start, clearly suggesting that the agressors are trying to organise the chaos that is the MASS hostage. Also when they are taking the mobiles off of the hostages, this clearly shows that they are trying to take control of a very hectic and dangerous situation. By cutting off the hostages contact with the outside world.
- Moreover, when the shot pans across the hostages faces, as the main "bad guy," is holding a gun in a mans face, they all look horrified and disgusted by the man's actions. Also they make gasping noises, showing that they are in great destress and feel very uncomfortable.

Costume:

- The abductors are all wearing white suites, that cover them from head to toe. They cover everything but their faces, hiding almost all of their identities. They are all also wearing, caps and balaclarvas to cover their facial features, making them much more of a threat visually as it is almost impossible for the hostages to distinguish what they look like.
- The main "bad guy," is tall and wearing a full suite as well as glasses and a balaclarva just like the other aggressors.
- Whereas all the hostages are wearing everyday work clothes.
The women = Were all generally wearing, skirt suites and colourful cardigans. As well as suite jackets and high heels.
The men = Were all wearing suites and shirts as well as ties and smart work suites. The dress of the male and female hostages, portrays them as very everyday and normal people. Which helps the audience to greatly empathise with their situation as they can relate to them and feel very sorry for the situation which they have found themselves in.

Costume Idea 4 - FINAL

This is our last costume idea, and the one we will use. We found that this costume promotes sexuality the most because of the amount of flesh that is shown, the length, and clevage. The back of this dress is also exactly the same as a character from Eastenders that i deconstucted, however, this character had a florescent pink bra underneath which was clearly visable, we did try to get hold of a pink bra but we unsuccessful. I photographed Laura wearing a red bikini underneath to represent her sexuality even more, however when we filmed for the first time you could hardly notice it so we thought it would be better if she was to wear a black bra instead.

Costume Idea 3

This is our next costume idea. Like costume 2, we have more flesh showing. It also exposes the back, which is like a character in Eastenders i deconstructed. This shows more sexuality because of the shape and style, however, the colour doesn't stand out very much like the sequins on costume 1, or colour on costume 2. The colour is also quite drab and doesn't represent sexuality at all.

Costume Idea 2

This was our second costume idea, we wanted to find something red which would immediately represent laura's sexuality, however the colour of this dress is more coral/pink, and we thought it didnt give the right impression.

In comparison the 'Costume Idea 1', this dress shows more flesh, which is more of what we were looking for, but is less eye catching. There is also no clevage shown whcih is another quality we were looking for.

Taken, Red Door scene - Deconstruction

Looking specifically at Costumes and Makeup
First woman - handcuffed to radiator, visable cuts on arm, injection marks enhanced by close-up shot (taken drugs). Half closed eyes, black eyemakup smudged, puffy/swollen eyes.
Mid shot - lying down on bed, no matress sheets, dirty wall paper, half covered with sheet, showing black bra (refering to sex/prostitution). Dark lighting, except for sunlight from underneath curtain.

Second woman - long shot - curled underneath dirty sheet, seemed to be asleep/dead, shiney face (sweaty), dim light, curtains also closed - gives dangerous and ill like affect.

Thrid woman - long shot - awkward position head bent, pained expression. Eyes half closed, lags and arms uncovered (naked) handcuffed to bed, swollen face.

Amanda (known character) - wearing tshirt, handcuffed to bed, shiney, sickening green shaded face, dark swollen eyes, vomit on chin and shoulder, eyes wide open. Long shot - legs spread open, awkward position (painful), Extereme close-up - of arm with needle marks, surrounding unblurred and show needle and cotton wool. Extreme close-up - eyes wide open, immediately audience knows she's dead.

Summary
All women - lying on bed, no matress sheets, dirty bed sheets and wallpaper, dark rooms with very little light, apart from where amanda is - dark rooms are used when women stil in use, a lot of light used to show amandas situation. All handcuffed to bed, showing sexual references, gets point across quicker than if they used rope etc. Legs spread open, sexual position, either completely naked or half naked, but covered with a sheet. Swollen, yellow puffy eyes, result from the drugs. All look in pain, very hot, unable to move.
Red Door - very significant, the colour of sexuality, prostitution, but also danger, anger, blood and murder.

Camera Shots
Close-up shots - of womens faces, very sweaty and shiney, greasy hair, glazed eyes which are half open, they have no expression, cleary not with it, audience immediately assumes they've taken something, smudged makeup.
Long shots - women lyind down, obviously naked but half covered by a dirty sheet, very dirty, no dialogue except 'i'm good' refering to sex.

Mis en scene
Located in middle of a Quarry, very isolated so this 'business' cannot be detected easily.
Sheets are used as room seperaters, everyhting is dirty, no comfort, shows how horrifically these girls are used.

Sound
Diegetic sounds of women behind sheets breathing, coughing and mumbling.

Filming SO FAR - Deconstruction "Pub scene."

So far we have filmed almost all the pub shots which we needed, however we have decided to film again, as there were many aspects which we thought we could improve upon. Including; dress, makeup, dialogue and the physical movement of the characters..
Below are all the areas which we think we can improve upon and make very effective in the final version:

Sound -

- Some of the dialogue which the characters said, in particular in the first few shots by the bar, were not said with enough/ the right emotion. For example, when Laura says " i know, i've had enough," she said it in quite an upset rather than outraged girl at her boyfriend. Therefore we will try to ensure that when we next film, her lines in the opening shots are delivered with more feeling and raw emotion.
- Also when the characters are laughing, in the shots when they are doing drink shots. The laughing comes across quite unnatural and forced. We will change this so that when we next film these shots of them, the laughing is much more natural. HOW: We will attempt this by actually making them laugh at something, and perhaps even rolling the camera when they're not ready/ are aware :)
- Overall we want the dialogue to sound much more natural and realistic, we will try to make the speech sound more like they are 3 good friends on a night out cheering up Laura. HOW: By making the boys speech more typically ladish in the first few shots. So that they say things such as "Oh who cares, you don't need him," "Plenty more fish in the sea," these sort of comments. Rather than things like, "I just don't understand why you let him mess you about?" Which doesn't at all seem like something a late teen/ early twentites comment from a guy.

Mise en Scene -

- The general feel of the scenes we shot in the bar, were pretty depressing and slightly intimidathing. We want the atmosphere to feel much more, like a normal night out, but that Laura's character is clearly angry with her boyfriend and wants to forget all about it.
- The guys, come across very oversensitive and in depth for a girl 17-23 years, to be hanging around with. We are going to make them much more believable and "ladish" in their behaviour. HOW: by giving them much more causal lines (see sound) and make their conversation more banter like.

Costume -

- One of the guys, James is wearing a light pink shirt and he looks very young in the shots. This is not helped by his perfect and therefore quite young looking hair as well as his skin, which is very pale. To greatly improve his look and make him represent and older and more "normal" lad, we will put him in a darker shirt to make him look more mature. Also we will make his hair so that it is styled a lot more casually. Moreover, we're going to perhaps add some more makeup such as; blusher/bronzer to his face, to give him more colour so that he looks less washed out.
- The two extras; Me and Florri looked slightly rigid and a bit too dressed up to be in a pub, therefore, we may try to dress us in more conventional clothes. Such as; little dresses but without heels. Moreover, in the acutal shots they sometime look a little awkward and too posed. For example; when the camera is on their backs, they could be sitting more relaxed and not so straight backed with glasses held up high in their hands. As it may look slightly too staged sometimes.

Fake bruises

Fake bruises- Practice.
We practiced fake bruises because the opening scene will start directly in the attic where Laura is tied to a chair so the audience doesn't know what actually happened to her before that. The bruises are all over her body which will be seen through close-ups which shows that she is being kept with lots of violence involved.

These bruises are one of our first tries and certainly not perfect. They are done by Ellen Cartwright with the assistance of me:)
Lots of people were volunteering to let us do bruises on their hands, faces and feet which gave us lots of opportunity to practice and therefore will benefit us for our final "painting".

I have also shown the photos to independent people without saying anything and they believed it was real, which is a very important issue that it's as close to reality as possible.

Deconstruction - 2 fast 2 furious "abduction/capture scene."

This deconstruction is focusing on the "capture" scene of a man who is then tortured.

Sound:

- The first shot of the man starts of with him walking into a V.I.P area, where there are men who are waiting to get information out of him, by any means. The sound starts of as the diagetic music in the background as the scene is in a club, the music is clubby but with a prominate bass sound.
- As the man "victim" and a woman walk into the V.I.P area, you can also hear their conversation which overlaps the background club music. This helps to emphasis the current situation unfolding. Then as they walk into the area, where the men are, other music is played over the club music, which is eary and uses violins, to build up tension.
- The sound then changes back to diaget, as the main "bad guy," says, "enjoying yourself D.I," immediately cutting the viewer back into the action and showing the danger of the mans situation. Also the use of his name, conveys instantly that the bad guy, knows EXACTLY who he is and therefore the hostility of the circumstances between them.
- As the men engage in a conversation, the woman leaves and the club music is heard again, cutting the audience straight back into the dangerous action.

Lighting:

- The lighting at the start of the scene is totally typical and autentic to a club environment. The lighting is quite dim but not dull. The lights are brighter as the man and woman enter the V.I.P area, as there is much more avaliable and created light, including the tall lamps which are next to the sofa, creating a slightly more comfy and misleadingly safe feel.
- The light in most of the shots, is a mixture of quite bright yellow and unnatural lights, highlighting the characters face, portraying that the light isn't nautral. In addition there are a few blue and red lights, which beam onto the characters. In the second shot, when the man walks over to the main bad guy, there is a much redder tinge to the light, suggesting the impending danger that he is in.
- The light on the shot when the man is lying on his back and is being torched, by a blow torch and a rat is on his stomach under a metal bucket. Here the light is very bright and unnatural, in the shot where the main bad guy is holding the torch in his face and shouting at him. The light is slightly blue which is the colour of the flame and is right up close in the shot, suggesting the intense discomfort of the man and the situation.

Mise en Scene:

- The whole scene from when the man enters to when he is forced ontop of a table to be forced into giving the bad guy " a window," to commit a crime, is very on edge and illustrates a feeling of increasing danger and authority of the bad guy over the man.
- When the man first enters, the initial effect is that he has been tricked by the woman, and therefore is potentially in peril. This is enhanced by the bad guy smiling menacingly as they gain eye contact, not only does the man know who he is but also that he is not at great risk of coming to harm.
- The Mise en Scene, when the man is lying down and has a bucket on his stomach with a rat underneath it, is very unnerving and disturbing for the audience to watch. When the man starts to shout and wail, " get it off me," this portays that he is in absoloute desperation and agony. And that even as a policeman, he is forced to give in and say, "i'll give you the window.. i'll give you the window," as he is so frantic to get away.

Costume:

- The man who is the victim, is dressed in a shirt and loose tie, which conjures up the image of an everyday working class, middle aged man. Which helps the audience to empathise with him, when he is being tortured and put in a very compromising position, as clearly he is nothing out of the ordinary, so why does he have to cope with such an ordeal. Moreover his hair looks quite bedraggled and slightly greasy, suggesting that he isn't very groomed and doesn't pay too much attention to his appearance.
- The main bad guy, is dressed in a very expensive looking suit, immediatley showing that he is very wealthy and has power and authority over the other characters. Also he is wearing very expensive looking jewellery and his hair is short and VERY well kept, implying that he has both the time and resorces to worry and focus on his self image.

Deconstruction - One Tree Hill "abduction scene."

Focusing on the Abduction scene of Peyton Sawyer and Brooke Davis

Lighting:

- First shot of the abduction scene, when Peyton is tied to a chair with a gag in her mouth. The light is very dim and she is mostly surrounded by very dark light. There are a few beams of light oh her faces and hair, highlighting her precarious and vulnerable situation.
- Then the show changes to a close up of her face, with much more light to emphasis her emotion and physical trauma. The light is still very blurred and dim.
- The next shot of Peyton, uses spot lights behind her head which portrays just how unnatural her surroundings are. It also emphasises just how dingy and succluded the place she is being held is. The lighting behind her head, also illustrates parts of her face which look strained and weary. Also creating shadows behind her which conveys, the great lack of light.

Sound:

- As soon as Peyton gains conciousness in the first shot, she immediately makes moaning noises, which clearly shows that she is uncomfortable and in pain. When she then opens her eyes and becomes aware of just how dangerous her situation is, she begins to start making loud moaning sounds and weeping.
- The next shot of Peyton when she becomes increasingly aware of what's going on, he begins to VERY heavily breath and almost hyperventilate, conveying how terrified and helpless she feels, as she can't do anything else. She can't move or scream out for help, as she is gaged.
- When Peyton is ungaged and is talking to "Derek" her abductor, she talks very calmly and almost creepily slowly to try to convince him to let her be untied. She says, "let me finish this bitch," and stares at his provocatively, using her sexuality to get herself out of danger.
- Later when Derek is chasing Peyton round the house, when she is locked in her room. He says, "open the door," very angrily and abruptly showing just how threatening and unstable he is.

Mise en scene:

- The overall feel of the scene is very threatening and precarious as everything the two girls do, in particular Peyton is being analysed and watched by Derek the abductor.
- When Peyton gets away from him and runs upstairs he chases her and shouts, "Open the door," demonstrating just how aggressive and unhinged he is, as he has just stabbed him and he is still determined to get to her.
- Moreover when Brooke Davis comes down into the cellar and finds Peyton, Derek grabs her and says "well well, Brooke Davis," illustrating just how involved and obsessed with Peyton's life and friends he is. Brooke then tries to get him off her, and she screams " get off me," this shows how desperate and scared she is.
- The screaming and shouting between Peyton and Brooke e.g When Peyton begins to fight back to Derek and says, "Get up," this conveys, that even though she's scared she in some ways subverts our expectations by fighting back to a bigger and intimidating man.

Costume:

- Peyton is dressed in a brilliant white long, prom dress. This is ICONIC of a virgin and pure idea, suggesting that she is innocent and vulnerable. Also her dress is embellished with glitter and sequins which suggests, that despite being an older teengager, she is still very young and is quite girly.
- Brooke is dressed in a much different dress, it is Blood red and has a low cut neck line, revealing quite a lot of cleavage. This creates a much more provocative and sexually capable image of a young girl. It also portrays that she is a vibrant and bold character, as she isn't afraid to be noticed and looked at. Her hair, is straight and long, creating a grown up and mature picture of an veyr young girl.
- Derek is dressed in a very posh and expensive looking black suite, this is very simple but also formal and portrays an image of an otherwise very normal and "everyday man." Therefore implying an even more disturbing image of the man, as he is dressed for the prom which he has prevented Peyton from going to, showing exaclty how OBSESSED he is with her life and what she does. This image is in total juxtaposition to his unstable and utterly disturbed personality.

The Godfather opening scene deconstruction (lighting)

low lighting, light shone from directly above head.
creates big shadows under eyes giving a villainous look.
you can see the shine on teeth.

the lights then focused on the guy who then looks like hes being interrogated giving the viewer the idea he is one of the main characters or a link of the main characters.

the dark eyes show he has something to hide.
changes to an over the shoulder shot of the interrogator with the light just about on the front of his face while the rest of his face is a dark silhouette.

the interrogators desk is well lit with a few sheets. it has sheets on it maybe about the guy he is talking to.

in the whole room all you can see is the guys desk and his face. the rest is a dark background focusing the viewer on these to characters.

the shot then turns to the interrogator who is well lit giving the impression hes got all the power.

the only light in this shot would be a key light and natural light through the blinds in the background.

Costume Idea 1

This is the first outfit we chose for laura. We found that the dress didn't fit the character well enough. From previous research we found that teenage girls tend to wear clothes that are more revealing and tighter around their figure. However the sequins on the front of the dress are eyecatching, it doesn't show enough sexuality which is what we wanted.

Deconstruction - Panic room for "abduction scene."

Lighting:



- Shot of the Man tied to a chair and a few single beams on light, landing on his face and his silloute. Outlining his physical form and the state of his body. The illustrates his isolation and intense vulnerability.

- The light only slightly changes, as the camera angle changes and pans around him. Light appears much more yellow and faded when the shot changes to straight on. The shows how dark and dingy the environment he is being kept in is. Portraying the danger of his situation and how unnatural it is.



Mise en Scene:



- The general fell of the shots of the abduction scene is; imposing, unsafe, danger and vulnerability.

- The couple of shots when the audience first sees the man, he is bleeding which shows his physical agony and vulneralitiy. Also two big men are leaning over him, shot from a low angle shot which suggests there strength and superiority over the hostage. They are also holding guns, which is an instant indicator of danger and threatening behaviour towards the victim. In addition they are wearing masks, which is a VERY imposing and clear sign of them wanting to hide their identities, which suggests that they are capable of inflicting pain on the hostage.



Sound:



- The first shot of the hostage, shows his immediate discomfort and pain, as the man lets deep and low murmers. Signifiying his pain and that he can bearly make sounds let alone speak, showing that he is in agony. He also wimpers when the woman "jodie foster" comes into the shot, illustrating that he is completely aware that she is there and wants to communicate but can't.

- When she is talking to him and tell him her plan, to get the 3 dangerous men out of the house, he replies with, "don't open the door!" Very abruptly and sharply, this use of a command shows, that he is desperate to protect his love ones E.g. his daughter. Also that he is very angry with the men and the situation which they are in.

- Again after he has told her not to "Open the door!" He makes more deep moaning noises and more deep breathing. This clearly shows that despite his brave attempt to have some authority over the situation and Jodie foster's character, he is in acute pain and discomfort.



Costume/Makeup:

- The burgulars as soon as they enter the house are dressed in all dark and black clothing, this signifies danger and physical intimidation in their presence. Suggesting their predatorial presence instantly as they enter the house with force.

- The man is wearing very plain and every day clothing for a middle aged man. He is dressed in a long brown coat which conjures up images of a hard working breadwinner father. Therefore he is very relatable for people, as he is just an "everyday" man being attacked in his own home. Also that people can empathise greatly with his unjust pain and situation of being held hostage.
- Lastly he is covered in blood, all over his face and coat this clearly portrays that he is in a desperate and dyer situation as his life is at risk. Moreover that he has been treated very brutaly and almost without any compassion at all.
